Signification of the Twelve Houses of the Horoscope: 3rd House
3rd House:
Now we come to the third house, which is the first house of desires or the Kama house. It is also the first of the Upachaya houses (house of growth). Planets placed in this house, even if malefic, will grow here and improve over time. This means that even while having negative planetary placements and trouble in the beginning, it would get better with passage of time and as such having the potential to overcome the problems. It is also called the Sahaja Bhava (innate) in Vedic Astrology, which reads into the valor and courage of the person without which a consistent effort in pursuing our goals is not possible.
Mercury and Mars are the natural significators of this house. This house throws light on stamina, will power, communication, personal ambitions, mind acumen, mental intelligence, writing, speech, oratory skills, hand skills, deliberate actions, short travels, investments of accumulated wealth, passions, recreations, initiation into spiritual practices. It is also the house relating to mental health, good or bad and signs of depression can also be seen from here.
It further relates to our siblings, neighbours, friends and relatives from the mother’s side of the family.
All sorts of professions relating to marketing, communication, talent and travel are seen from the third house. It governs our verbal expression to the outer world and our personal inclinations; hence planets placed here and the placement of the third house lord is very important in analyzing the results in positive or negative.
Let me conclude by saying that on a deeper examination of the third house we understand the “Ego” of the native, the self expression (ingenuity) and it is here we know the true nature of ourselves.
